Normal Work Hours and Days A normal work day consists of 10-12 hours possibly longer depending on workload. Hours and start time will vary depending on workload. Night shift work required as needed.

Summary:
The Diller is responsible operating variety of drills in a safe and appropriate manner. Operating a variety of drills such as rotary, churn, and pneumatic, to remove core samples during mineral exploration or soil testing, and to facilitate the use of explosives in mining or construction. Includes horizontal and earth boring machine operators. The position may assist other craft workers.

Essential Functions:
  • Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in mining/heavy construction projects.
  • Operate drilling equipment.
  • Operate pumps or compressors.
  • Install drilling equipment.
  • Operate controls to stabilize machines and to position and align drills.
  • Start, stop, and control drilling speed of machines and insertion of casings into holes.
  • Regulate air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure, according to the type of rock or concrete being drilled.
  • Select and attach drill bits and drill rods, adding more rods as hole depths increase, and changing drill bits as needed.
  • Drive or guide truck-mounted equipment into position, level and stabilize rigs, and extend telescoping derricks.
  • Operate machines to flush earth cuttings or to blow dust from holes.
  • Verify depths and alignments of boring positions.
  • Perform routine maintenance and upgrade work on machines and equipment, such as replacing parts, building up drill bits, and lubricating machinery.
  • Select the appropriate drill for the job, using knowledge of rock or soil conditions.
  • Drive trucks, tractors, or truck-mounted drills to and from work sites.
  • Assemble and position machines, augers, casing pipes, and other equipment, using hand and power tools.
  • Record drilling progress and geological data.
  • Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
  • Maintain drilling equipment.
  • Inspect equipment or tools to be used in construction or excavation.
  • Dispose of garbage according to set policies and procedures
  • Use hand-held mobile radio units to coordinate tasks and resources.
  • Comply with Company and customer policies and procedures
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Help identify hazardous conditions on the job site.
  • Report any damage immediately to supervisor
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function and preferably able to perform other tasks satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 

Education and/or Experience:
Minimum:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a Driller in Construction and mining projects
  • Basic math skills to accurately calculate dimensions of forms and molds
Preferred:
  • MSHA certification
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions
  • Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Ability to read, understand and implement project plans and documents
  • Ability to communicate information in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability to effectively understand and communicate verbally with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
